Andrea Hamilton: Kevin is a great friend and a very humble person, so I stopped feeling intimidated after about five minutes of writing with him. Every time we sit down to write a song, I learn something about how to write, but more than that, I learn something about life.

Jen G: Andrea, could you give us the scoop on the new song you wrote, “Truth, Get Your Boots On”?

Andrea Hamilton: That’s a co-write with Kevin. I went to his house, and he brought up the title, which he had scribbled down earlier. I said, “That’s funny, I just wrote a poem about Truth!” And lyrics started springing up from there.

Jen G: As a Christian, how has God led you to write truthful music that’s not necessarily religiously inclined, but produced by faith and influenced by God?

Andrea Hamilton: This is actually just the type of music that comes most naturally to me. I believe we all have different gifts—some Christ-following songwriters are meant to contribute sacred songs to modern-day worship services, some are to write for the church-going market, and some should spread the gospel more implicitly by writing within their value system and living lives that back that message up.

Jen G: If you could sit down and talk to your fans, saved or unsaved, what would you say about your walk with Christ? How has your relationship with Him caused you to see life?

Andrea Hamilton: There’s a lot to say! A lot of times I just share where I’m at in that particular moment, and there always seem to be a few people who can relate. I try to be honest. Like, I played a show in Fullerton one night when I was on some medicine that…well, it made me really moody. So I shared the fact that I wasn’t doing so hot and sang some of my “sadder” songs.

It was a step out for me, and I was a little worried that people who came to see me perform like usual would be disappointed. But instead, I got thanked for my honesty, and it opened up opportunities for other people to share with me about their struggles.

That’s kind of what art is to me—a way to connect. I guess this walk with Christ thing isn’t as easy or predictable as I thought it was going to be, but it is so worth it. It’s the most important thing in my life, by far. The fact that Jesus Christ would want to spend every day with me still blows me away.
