OCTOBER’S NEW SOUND
The Christian music releases worth putting on your fall playlist
“Sing unto the LORD a new song.” Psalm 96:1
Fall has officially arrived and Christian music is bringing plenty of new music with it. October 2026 may not have the sheer volume of September’s release calendar, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in variety. Gospel, worship, contemporary Christian, pop and singer songwriter sounds all have a place on the schedule, with several established artists using the month to introduce new chapters in their music.
And there is a common thread running through many of these projects: community, identity, worship and the reminder that faith is meant to be lived out loud.
So don’t think of this as another release calendar. Think of it as your October listening guide the projects worth circling, saving and pressing play on when the leaves start changing.
OCTOBER 2
Gospel, worship and a church wide celebration
October gets off to a strong start. The first Friday of the month brings new projects from Koryn Hawthorne, Tauren Wells, bodie and Vineyard Worship, according to current release listings. That’s a remarkably diverse way to begin the month.
KORYN HAWTHORNE
Big Gospel
October 2 | Gospel / R&B
Koryn Hawthorne enters a new chapter with Big Gospel, her first project following her signing with Motown Gospel. The two time GRAMMY nominated artist previewed the EP with “His Favorite,” a song built around confidence, belonging and the reminder that our worth isn’t something we have to earn.
Hawthorne described the song as being about knowing that you are already loved and chosen. That message gives Big Gospel a compelling starting point.
Why we’re watching: Hawthorne has the vocal power and gospel/R&B background to make this one of October’s most accessible faith based releases.
The Scripture connection:
“I have loved thee with an everlasting love.” Jeremiah 31:3
Fan forecast: The gospel/R&B pick.
TAUREN WELLS
Here Comes The Church (Live)
October 2 | Worship / Gospel
If one October release has the potential to feel like an event, it’s this one. Tauren Wells recorded Here Comes The Church (Live) in front of a sold out crowd at Austin City Limits Moody Theater in Austin. The project brings together an unusually broad collection of guests, including Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Israel Houghton, Hulvey, Naomi Raine, Abbie Gamboa, Tiffany Hudson, Pastor Mike Jr. and Red Rocks Worship, among others.
The project is currently scheduled for October 2 and is listed as a 17 song release by Apple Music. But the bigger story is the idea behind it. Wells has described the project as an attempt to bring people out of separate musical and cultural worlds and into a picture of the church as a whole.
Why we’re watching: This isn’t simply a live worship album. It’s an attempt to put musical diversity and church unity in the same room.
The Scripture connection:
“For we being many are one body in Christ.” Romans 12:5
Fan forecast: October’s biggest worship event.
BODIE
SELL OUT EP
October 2 | Contemporary / Rap
bodie brings another sound into the opening weekend lineup with SELL OUT EP. His presence on the October calendar adds another layer to what is becoming one of the defining characteristics of Christian music in 2026: artists refusing to stay inside a single musical box.
Why we’re watching: For listeners who want faith centered music with a younger, genre fluid energy, this is one to keep on the radar.
Fan forecast: The playlist wildcard.
VINEYARD WORSHIP
Reign Forevermore EP
October 2 | Worship
Vineyard Worship returns with Reign Forevermore, an EP that continues a worship tradition stretching back decades. The project is already appearing as an upcoming release on Spotify, with the service displaying a release countdown for the EP. For longtime worship listeners, the Vineyard name carries a particular history: intimate, congregational songwriting designed to work inside the church rather than simply on a stage.
Why we’re watching: Sometimes the most powerful worship music isn’t trying to be complicated.
The Scripture connection:
“The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations.” Psalm 146:10
Fan forecast: For the Sunday morning playlist.
OCTOBER 9
Mat Kearney brings the heart of a songwriter into the fall
The second major release Friday takes a more personal turn.
MAT KEARNEY
Hanging by a Heartstring
October 9 | Contemporary / Singer songwriter
Mat Kearney’s Hanging by a Heartstring arrives October 9. Kearney’s official website is already promoting the record and confirms the October 9 release date. The project contains 12 songs, according to Apple Music.
The album’s title alone suggests vulnerability a fitting description for a songwriter whose music has consistently explored relationships, memory, hope and faith through a highly personal lens. The project is already being previewed with songs including “Gotta Have You” and “Catch A Fire.”
Why we’re watching: Kearney has always lived comfortably between Christian music and the broader singer songwriter world. That makes this a particularly interesting listen for fans who don’t want their faith based music confined to one format.
The Scripture connection:
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
Fan forecast: The headphones on, lights low album.
MITCH WONG
Re:said
October 9 | Contemporary / Worship
Songwriter and worship artist Mitch Wong brings Re:said to the October 9 lineup. Wong has become one of the recognizable songwriting voices behind contemporary worship, and a project carrying his name deserves attention from listeners interested in the songwriting side of Christian music.
Why we’re watching: Wong’s strength has always been turning big spiritual ideas into songs people can actually sing.
Fan forecast: The songwriter’s choice.
ROOSEVELT STEWART
Memory (Live)
October 9 | Gospel / Worship
Roosevelt Stewart follows with Memory (Live). The live format gives the project a different feel from a conventional studio release and adds another worship/gospel option to the month’s increasingly varied calendar.
Why we’re watching: Live recordings have a way of capturing something studio albums can’t the sense that the listener is participating rather than simply listening.
OCTOBER 16
A new generation gets the spotlight
The October 16 calendar is quieter, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.
SHAYLEE SIMEONE
Honest Jesus Music, Vol. 2
October 16 | Christian
The title says plenty. Shaylee Simeone returns with Honest Jesus Music, Vol. 2, currently scheduled for October 16 on NewReleaseToday’s release calendar. The phrase “Honest Jesus Music” is particularly interesting in an era when younger Christian listeners increasingly want music that talks about faith without pretending life is always simple.
Why we’re watching: Authenticity has become one of the most important currencies in modern Christian music.
The Scripture connection:
“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
Fan forecast: The discovery pick.

THE BIGGER STORY
September may have been about the quantity of Christian music arriving. October feels more like it’s about identity. Who is the church? What does faith sound like outside the traditional worship format? Can gospel, R&B, hip hop, pop and worship occupy the same playlist? And perhaps most importantly: Can music still be honest about faith while being honest about life?
The October releases suggest the answer is yes. Koryn Hawthorne is singing about knowing your worth. Tauren Wells is building a musical picture of a diverse church. Mat Kearney is leaning into vulnerability. Vineyard Worship is returning to the language of congregational praise. And emerging artists are continuing to redefine what “Christian music” can sound like.
That makes October more than another month of new releases. It becomes a snapshot of where the genre is heading.
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth.” Isaiah 43:19
Maybe that’s the best way to approach the month’s music. Don’t just ask which album is biggest. Ask which song speaks to where you are right now. Then press play.
