Dressed for the season

Timeless Autumn Style with
a Heart of Gratitude

Written by Jen Gault

One of my favorite childhood memories is from fall, when my mother would wrap me in a beautiful velvet dress. Sometimes it was a warm burgundy red; other times, a dark splash of black. I remember crushed velvet, heart shaped necklines, leggings, boots, a fluffy fur hat, warm gloves, and a scarf layered beneath a cozy brown coat.

I loved the smell of burning leaves and the crisp, cool air touching my face. Even though I have never been a fan of the cold, I have always loved the scents and memories that come with autumn: the smell of marshmallows and chocolate melting between graham crackers, the sound of my feet stepping through fallen leaves, and the feeling that something special was happening in the season around me.

Autumn is more than a change in weather. It is an invitation to notice God’s creation.

“Every season carries a reminder of the Creator’s beauty. Fall simply invites us to slow down long enough to see it.”

Fashion naturally changes with the seasons, but true style has never been about chasing trends. It is about expressing who we are with confidence, gratitude, and authenticity.

Style Begins Within

I believe style is a reflection of the heart.

When we know who we are in Christ, even choosing something from our closet can reflect how we see ourselves through our Father’s eyes. The confidence we carry is not found in a designer label or the newest trend. It comes from knowing we are loved, accepted, and wonderfully created by God.

Clothing does not define us, but it can reflect the peace, joy, and confidence already placed within us.

“Our wardrobe may reflect the beauty around us, but our character reflects the beauty God is growing within us.”

As Christians, we have the freedom to enjoy beauty because beauty begins with our Creator. The rich earth tones we love wearing, burgundy, forest green, chocolate brown, camel, cream, and warm gold, were displayed across hillsides, forests, and sunsets long before they appeared in our closets.

Perhaps that is why autumn feels so comforting. Our clothing begins to mirror creation itself.

Timeless Style Returns

This season brings back many influences from the 1980s and 1990s, decades that celebrated clothing that was practical, personal, and made for everyday life.

Structured blazers, oversized sweaters, quality denim, leather boots, cozy scarves, wool coats, and timeless accessories were not just fashionable; they were functional.

Today, those same influences are returning with a modern touch. Musicians, actors, and everyday people are embracing vintage inspired style through Western boots, layered denim, tailored jackets, chunky knits, classic outerwear, and comfortable silhouettes.

These styles continue to resonate because they offer something timeless:

Comfort. Confidence. Authenticity.

The beauty of these trends is that they are not reserved for a stage or a special occasion. They are made for real life.

Dressing for the Moments That Matter

Whether you are walking through a fall festival, serving at a church event, meeting friends for coffee, cheering from the sidelines, or gathering around the Thanksgiving table, your wardrobe should help you enjoy the moment, not distract from it.

For women, soft sweaters, tailored trousers, midi skirts, boots, scarves, and crossbody bags create effortless style that is both beautiful and functional.

For men, dark denim, flannel shirts, lightweight jackets, leather boots, and textured sweaters offer timeless pieces that transition easily from everyday moments to family celebrations.

Fashion serves us best when it supports the life we are living.

Thanksgiving Style: Gathering with Gratitude

Thanksgiving reminds us that the sweetest moments rarely happen on a runway.

They happen around a table.

In kitchens filled with laughter.

On front porches wrapped in blankets.

Around backyard fire pits.

Inside homes where stories are shared, prayers are spoken, and hugs are held a little longer.

As we choose our Thanksgiving outfits this fall, let it not be about impressing people, but about being with people.

“The greatest thing we wear this season is not found in our closet. It is the love, kindness, and gratitude we carry with us.”

May we enjoy the warmth of someone’s home, the comfort of a loved one’s embrace, the cool evening breeze wrapped in a favorite scarf, the crunch of leaves beneath our boots, and that cozy knit beanie that somehow makes every autumn memory feel complete.

These are not just clothes.

They are part of the memories we make.

Every fall reminds us that change is part of God’s beautiful design. Spring has passed, summer has finished its work, and autumn arrives with a quiet reminder that every season has purpose. It teaches us to slow down, to gather, to grow, to love well, and to give thanks.

Scripture reminds us:

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
